Philosophy: Art, Environment & Community Empowerment

At Nemasu, we are committed to providing a comfortable & happy 'home away from home' for guests.

We understand that most travelers to The Gambia are looking for rest and relaxation, a feel for African culture & its environment, and for some, a little adventure.  Our hotel is on a very safe, friendly and peaceful part of the Gambian coast. We provide comfortable beds, 24 hr security, clean, healthy food & water, and a great connection to artists & musicians in our community.

Art & music.

Our environment is designed to be both creative and artistic, and an opporunity for peace and relaxation. We like to think Nemasu will inspire both locals and visitors alike to explore the beauty of the environment and the depth of African culture. As such, Nemasu is developing an eclectic collection of art.  Its buildings interact to create a variety of indoor and outdoor “sacred” spaces.  All the while visiting musicians, artists, and a diverse library allow for immersion within Gambian culture. Nemasu aims to reach beyond rest and relaxation to offer a refreshing, positive experience of Africa.

We support our community.

The wonderful thing about Gambia is its people. Overcoming widespread poverty and enormous challenges, they are among the most friendly, caring, and enthusiastic people in the world.  We wish to learn from and support this vibrant community. All of our staff are local. In some cases, we've trained people who we believe in, eventhough they had minimal education or training, to become a valued part of the Nemasu community. We keep our staff working throughout the year- even when tourism gets slow in the summer. We don't take profits out of the community- any profit is returned in the form of community projects.

We have a program to assist local children to afford school fees and help them graduate from school. You're welcome to come and check out the school, and assist a local child if you like. We can give details, but the cost is around £200 to get one child through school for one year- this includes books, exam fees, uniform, etc.

Some of our other programs include a sea turtle protection program. Often, local people will kill and eat turtles & turtle eggs. In the summer last year, we moved 9 nests along 2 kilometers of coastline near Nemasu, to a protected area close to Nemasu, where we paid for 24 hour security guards. We had baby turtles make it to the sea in all cases. Come along and give us hand around August / September / October- it's pretty fun!

We believe it's our responsibility to protect and nurture our environment.

Nemasu sits in an idyllic piece of coastal forest, looking out to a pristine beach and the Atlantic Ocean.   We're surrounded by beauty, but we don't take it for granted. Our aim is to be as self-sustaining as possible: we are developing organic farming, we employ solar panels to generate electricity and have solar heating to warm our water.  We recycle our trash & food, and use state of the art septic systems.  Our buildings are mostly built from local, natural materials.

During 2010, we planted hundreds of plants and native trees: Malina, avocado, mango, orange, lemon, lime, coconut, in addition to many local herbs.  The Malina trees serve to reforest the local area, while the fruit keeps our monkey population happy. We have a family of over five monkeys who have made Nemasu their home.
